I agree with you (good Scripture references). There is no biblical injunction against owning a slave. There are however strict warnings and punishment for those who participate in man stealing (slave trade). That is one of the areas that our country failed . . . the Northern slave trade. There are of course other areas of fault to be found, but that is the main one.
Paul did not condemn Philemon for claiming Onesimus as his slave.
RL Dabney in his Discussions argues that the slave ownership is not in the person per se but in his labor. Of course the goal is for all to be free. However in this fallen world, because of sin, slavery is inevitable. As the gospel goes forth, we should expect less and less of it.
