Both. He began as a hero, and did many good things. But as James was overthrown and he began his reign of terror in Scotland and elsewhere in England, he lost his heroism and became a tyrant. There's no one answer to the question.

My argument is that most of the foul things attributed to him were wrongly attributed to him and were actually the foul parliament residing during the times. I will say he failed in that he didn't put anything in place to prevent Kings from becoming tyrants unchecked and he failed to push for reform on the local level. He dissolved several Parliaments, but I down shun him for that. I think we could use that kind of cleansing in our country.

Do you mean that Cromwell began a reign of terror in Scotland? What does James have to do with Cromwell?
